Building The Trail
COSCA planned and flagged the new .3 mile trail route. The current route does not go all the way to the top of the peak, but to a natural, wide and level overlook area. A bench is planned for this vista point. A professional crew was hired to brush out the new route. The trails council planned and organized a volunteer crew to cut in a bench with a four foot tread and build a switch back for the new route. On May 30th, a crew of 31 volunteers, joined two COSCA Rangers at the Hill Canyon Bridge, to undertake the project. The volunteer crew consisted of near equal numbers of SMMTC trail crew and local geocaching enthusiasts. Burt was an avid geocacher and was known to, and admired by most other geocachers in the local community. The crew caravaned in vehicles into the park to a location near the new trail and then hiked one mile to the trail head. The group was split into three crews and dispersed along the route. It was a rather steep slope for most of the way so there was a lot of dirt and rocks be moved. All the volunteers worked hard and there were many “Burt Elliott stories” to be heard. By the end of the six hour work-day the project was completed.
In the future, the trail may be extended to the top. However, due to the difficult terrain features, this will be a much more difficult trail segment than the one just completed.
