Trail Maintenance

January 31, 2009

Backbone Trail - West from Latigo Road toward Kanan Road

NPS - Castro Crest

This was a joint project with CORBA and the Sierra Club Task Force

We had an amazing group of 44 (!) volunteers join us today - from California Lutheran University (CLU), Pepperdine University, Concerned Off-Road Bicyclists Association (CORBA), and North Hollywood High School. Another 16 volunteers with the Sierra Club's Santa Monica Mountains Task Force, led by Ron and Mary Ann Webster, worked from the other end of the trail on Kanan Dume Road. Both groups met for lunch under the shady oaks with a beautiful ocean view. The newcomers learned trail maintenance techniques quickly and everyone worked hard removing excessive vegetation from encroaching onto the trail and grooming the tread. A photographer from Malibu Surfside News snapped some photos and posted an article (pdf - see page 13) about our event. CORBA also snapped some more nice photos of the event.

The day began with Orientation and Safety Talks:
