Signs Replacement Project

La Jolla Valley

Project Overview

Each existing sign and trail junction in Point Mugu State Park were photographed, mapped and documented in a spreadsheet with comments as to current status and recommendations for improvement. Suggestions were also added for new signage at unsigned junctions and for signs that should be considered for removal, resulting in a comprehensive plan for signing the entire park.

Phase 4 will be signs in La Jolla Valley

Phase 5 will be Serrano Valley.

Current Status

Several signs remain to be installed in La Jolla Valley.

On 3/11/2026, seven SMMTC regulars met at 8:30am at Wendy/Potrero to carpool into La Jolla Valley. We were joined by Ann Stansell, State Park Archaeologist, as we were installing signs in culturally sensitive areas. In addition to nine wayfinding signs, we also installed two standalone "No Bikes" signs to alert bike riders to not proceed on the eastern Loop Trail junction or on the fire road past the outhouse.

We started at the end of the driveable road and carried posts, the post pounder, signs and tools 1.8 mi round-trip to deal with the farthest two junctions. After returning to our vehicles, we then proceeded east along the fire road installing removing replacing signs to the junction of La Jolla Valley Fire Road/Overlook Fire Road/Guadalasca Trail.

Statistics: Signs installed: 11 this report, 108 total. Posts pounded: 5 this report, 63 total. Posts removed: 4 this report, 40 total. Phase 4 signs remaining: 7

On April 24, 2026, Two SMMTC regulars started at the Ray Miller Trailhead around 9:00am to install two new signs/posts at the junction of the Ray Miller Trail and the spur trail to the Group Campground making two trips to carry the necessary equipment and hardware. One of the posts was a challenge to install, while the other went in much easier. After completing the new sign/post installations, we made another trip back to the car to get a different set of tools to replace the unreadable/damaged signs on a wooden post directing people from the Group Campground to the Ray Miller Trail. We removed the two “easier” signs from the post, leaving the more difficult third sign for last, and began to cut back the brush obscuring the post when we were approached by an individual unloading a single car (apparently an early arrival from a larger group) who asked us to leave. We returned to our car and left at about 11:30am. We will complete the job another time.

Statistics: Signs installed: 2 this report, 110 total. Posts pounded: 2 this report, 65 total. Posts removed: 0 this report, 40 total. Phase 4 signs remaining: 4
