In the first half of 2022, the Trails Council (led by Jerry Mitcham and Jon Sheldon) partnered with State Parks to assess and improve the trail signage in Pt. Mugu State Park. This includes funding and installation of new signs plus the removal of obsolete signage. All new signs will have UV protection and be installed with tamper-resistant hardware.
The Bent Arrow Trail was severely damaged by a mudslide in December 2021. Water saturated the soil when a significant amount of rain fell in a short period of time. This caused a section of trail to slide down the slope. Alas, the Palisades fire of 2025 destroyed the wall we built.
2020. Chamberlain Trail. Several Saturdays requiring hikes up to 5 miles & 2,300 feet elevation gain(one way) along - with a couple of hundred volunteer hours removing brush and repairing tread resulted for the moment in a trail that is much nicer to hike and enjoy. Using a combination of hedge trimmers, loppers and saws, a considerable amount of brush was removed. When we first encountered this segment - it was hard to see where the trail went. The trail bed was there but plants had nearly hidden the tread.
2017. Restoration and access updates for Santa Barbara Island’s trails.
2017-2019. The Santa Monica Mountains Trails Council (SMMTC) installed kiosks and picnic benches at twelve BBT trailheads.
2017, Several years after the Springs Fire of 2013, several inches came down in the night, and wiped away several segments of trail.
